Hong Chun Zhang, Breeze#2, 36 x 96", charcoal on paper with scrolls, 2018

Hong Chun Zhang is a Lawrence, Kansas-based artist who makes exquisitely rendered, large-scale charcoal drawings of hair that explore the notion of layered identity. Zhang, who was raised in China but has lived in the United States since 1996, sees her drawings of hair as a means to investigate not just her dual cultural identity, but also the changing nature of femininity and beauty over the course of a woman’s lifetime.
