WHAT ARE LENIN, STALIN, CUSTER,
MUSSOLINI, & THE SURREAL ORANGE
DOING IN BEND?
Yes, you read that correctly.
Vladimir, Josef, George, Benito, and Donald will be coming to Bend, Oregon.
The boys will be hanging out At Liberty from March 13th 2020 to the end of April.
They are here for Jim Riswold’s Russians & Americans & One Italian show at the gallery.
Riswold calls his work “Absurd Realism.”
Artist David Levinthal calls it “Perverse Whimsy.”
Still others call it “a black hole sucking the life out of everything.”
At Liberty is excited to present the first exhibition of Jim Riswold’s work in Bend. His work has been shown in galleries throughout the Northwest and is in permanent collections of several museums including the Portland Art Museum, the Hallie Ford Museum and the Schnitzer Collection. Most of his work pokes fun at historically taboo figures by constructing monumental settings in which the figurines of infamous leaders are photographed. Riswold explains that "Instead of providing … grand expositions mythologizing the dictator, toys, by definition, make their subjects seem small, childish, and trifling.”
